Lorsque, suspendu à une corde, Kazuo Shiraga s’élance pieds nus sur la toile déposée au sol, et qu’il vient en balayer la surface couverte de peinture, il fait sienne l’une des maximes du groupe Gutai dont il est l’un des membres fondateurs : « faire ce que personne n'avait jamais entrepris ». Il en va plus naturellement encore de Jackson Pollock, dont la gestuelle et la fascination pour le chamanisme amérindien rappellent à de nombreux égards la pratique de Shiraga. En engageant son corps tout entier dans son œuvre, le travail de Shiraga anticipe enfin l'art de la performance, ce que ne manquera de souligner Allan Kaprow dans ses écrits des années 1960.
When Kazuo Shiraga dangled from a rope and began painting with his bare feet on a piece of canvas on the floor, sweeping across the surface, he was fully embracing one of the maxims of the Gutai group, of which he was a founding member: "Do what no one has ever attempted before." His technique traces its roots to the Japan of the 1950s on the fertile ground of the traumas of the Second World War, at a time when moral and artistic codes were shaken and seemed destined for complete upheaval. Shiraga emerged in that context, overturning the aesthetic values that had reigned until that point: with him, the artist no longer faced a blank canvas as he would a screen propped up in front of him; he is literally and entirely in the painting. The artwork itself is no longer to be found in any sort of finiteness or preconceived design; rather, it lies in capturing the trace of a presence and witnessing an action.
An observer looking at Yu-Gyo follows the black furrows and understands the singular choreography performed by the artist. The monographic treatment of the surface adds to the dramatic intensity of the work and its authority, as a reminder that "Shiraga's painting elicits a feeling that it is quite rare to experience before a canvas: respect - for the trial the artist inflicted on himself and from which he emerged victorious, to varying degrees. Surely no one revealed as much about what is heroic in abstract painting." (J. Turot, "La Peinture Comme Héroïsme", Ena Mensuel, Paris, May 1992). In Buddhism, the Japanese term Yu-Gyo refers to the walk a monk takes while preaching, which Western shorthand might compare to the practices of the Greek Peripatetic school, in which philosophical inquiry is conducted while walking. For Shiraga, who was a Tendai monk, that reference has additional meaning as he literally touched the canvas with his feet to create his works.
Shiraga's approach, though constructed and refined in the quasi- autarchy of Japan, has many echoes in the West. For example, Gauguin, as recalled by Antoni Tàpies, "proclaimed that when his right hand became too deft, he would paint with his left hand, and when his left hand became too skilled, he would paint with his feet,"(Antoni Tàpies, introduction to the Shiraga exhibition catalogue, Paris, Galerie Stadler, 1992). There are even more natural echoes in the case of Jackson Pollock, whose gestures and fascination with Native American shamanism call to mind Shiraga's practices in many respects. By committing his entire body to his œuvre, Shiraga's work was a forerunner to performance art, which Allan Kaprow underlined in his writing in the 1960s.
