ART DECO DIAMOND AND ONYX BROOCH, CARTIER
Square, rectangular and old-cut diamonds, buff-top onyx, platinum (French marks), removable brooch fitting, 3 1/8 ins., circa 1930, signed Cartier, 'Paris', 'Made in France', nos. 01447, 02506

The diamond and onyx panels from the present lot were previously part of a larger brooch by Cartier that was displayed at the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs. In the years following the exposition, the original brooch was dismantled and the diamond and onyx panels that originally flanked a central emerald panel were newly designed into a separate brooch, the present lot 447.

The central carved emerald panel of the original brooch from 1925 was also reworked by Cartier and was recently sold in Christie’s landmark Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence auction on June 19, 2019 (Lot 274).
