Specialist note
This engraving is based on Giulio Romano's design for the fresco, executed by Rinaldo Mantovano, in one of the lunettes of Loggia di Davide at Palazzo Te in Mantua, with some minoralterations. Giovanni Battista Scultori, often called Mantovano (even though originally from Verona), was a painter, architect and engraver in Mantua. A pupil of Giulio Pippi, and the father of Adamo and Diana, he is considered the father of the Mantuan School of printmaking, which also included Giorgio Ghisi. Other works by the artist are in offered in this sale (see lots 8, 9 and 108).
