NICOLAS BEATRIZET (1507/15-1573) AFTER MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI (1475-1564)
A standing Man with Arms folded
engraving, circa 1546-66, on laid paper, watermark Letter M with Star in a Shield (similar to Briquet 8390 & 8391), a fine impression of this rare print, with a light plate tone and many wiping marks, with small margins at right and below, trimmed and with a made-up platemark at left and below, otherwise in very good condition
Sheet 363 x 191 mm.

Sotheby's, London, 27 June 1989, lot 88.
With Artemis Fine Arts, London; acquired from the above sale.
Acquired from the above, on 28 June 1989.

Specialist note

The print is based on a figure in Michelangelo's fresco, begun in 1546, of the Crucifixion of Saint Peter in the Capella Paolina at the Vatican. An impression with a complete platemark and wide margins, sold at Sotheby's, London, on 29 June 1993 (lot 76), proves that the plate of this print was considerably bigger than the present sheet, with large blank areas at left and above. For a more detailed discussion of this print, see Richard Godfrey's note in Sotheby's catalogue of 1993.
