À l'heure où il conçoit Petite buste d'homme, Giacometti est habité par le sentiment d'avoir épuisé toutes les possibilités qu'offraient les figures filiformes hautement expressives qui lui ont valu sa consécration internationale. Il cherche désormais à recréer une impression plus concrète de la présence humaine dans l'espace, telle que l'on la perçoit réellement. Giacometti's intimate relationship with his sitters contributed to the intensity of their physical and emotional presence in his new sculptures. The poet Yves Bonnefoy observed: "It is already surprising enough to find an artist at the height of his powers, who in the space of three or four years had sculpted some of the major archetypes of modern art and was immediately recognized as such, practically abandoning this type of creation in order to devote himself to the portraits of a few individuals […] Giacometti had indeed chosen the existence of individuals, the here and now as the chief object of his new and future study; and that he instinctively realized that this object transcended all artistic signs and representations, since it was no less than life itself" (in Alberto Giacometti: A Biography of his Work, Paris, 1991, p. 369).
By the time that he created the present work, Giacometti felt that he had exhausted the possibilities inherent in the acutely expressive, stick-like figures that had previously brought him international fame. He now sought to reclaim a more concrete sense of the human presence in space as we perceive it. Just as he had done in 1935, when he gave up his surrealist and abstract manner, an art created from memory and imagination, Giacometti once again committed himself to working before a living model, and from that moment on he would work almost exclusively on images of his wife Annette for female figures, and his brother Diego for male heads.
Petite buste d'homme demonstrates the Giacometti’s rugged and searching approach to the model via his distinct technique, whereby he would continually build up and then break down the plaster model he held in his hands. “I shall never succeed in putting into a portrait all the power a head contains”, Giacometti lamented (quoted in R. Hohl, ed., Giacometti: A Biography in Pictures, Ostfildern-Ruit, 1998, p. 148). This heroic and seemingly futile, Sisyphean quest, this struggle with being and nothingness, required a staunch, resilient subject.
In the present work, the figure is portrayed as simply his head and bust. Indeed, by focusing exclusively on the head and an armless upper torso, and excluding the rest of the figure, the sculptor emphasized a conception of a universal man, in the roles of seeing and thinking. The most important sign of life, Giacometti believed, is awareness, a consciousness of the world, perceived through the faculty of one's gaze. “If the gaze, that is life, is the main thing”, he declared, “then the head becomes the main thing, without a doubt. The rest of the body is limited to functioning as antennae that make people’s life possible—the life that is housed in the skull” (quoted in ibid., p. 146).
