1960, Max Ernst a 69 ans. Il vit à Huismes en Touraine avec sa compagne Dorothea Tanning. Loin des tumultes de la ville et des dogmes du groupe des surréalistes dont il a été exclu en 1954, Ernst n'a de cesse de continuer à créer. Ses échanges avec son biographe américain Waldberg à partir de 1955 intensifie sa propre réflexion sur sa vie.
Ne se limitant ni au sujet, ni au rendu, les procédés de réalisation sont toujours au cœur de ses préoccupations.
Pour cette œuvre, qui est présentée en vente publique pour la première fois, l’artiste utilise la technique du grattage: la toile, d’abord préparée avec une couche de peinture à l'huile bleue et jaune, est posée sur un objet texturé rappelant la trame d'un papier Craft, afin d’être grattée pour en révéler la surface. Ernst peut ensuite travailler dans la peinture en répondant aux marques et formes hasardeuses créées par la texture.
Cette technique, extension pour la peinture, à celle du frottage qu'il invente dès 1925 pour le dessin, apparaît comme l'écho plastique de l’écriture automatique des surréalistes, permettant de suspendre le contrôle de la pensée rationnelle en faveur de l’expression de l’inconscient, point de départ favori de l'inspiration de l'artiste.
D’inconscient proche de la nature, Max Ernst constate que presque tout ce qu'il frotte ou gratte devient automatiquement forêt.
Sans doute préfigurée dans le mouvement romantique allemand dont il est héritier, la place de l'homme et de la nature dans l'art est au centre de ses préoccupations. Dans un entretien mené par Georges Charbonnier en 1959 il confie: "Si l'on trouve rarement une représentation fidèle de l'homme dans mes peintures, on peut constater que tout y est anthropomorphe : les oiseaux, les arbres [...]. Et c'est cela, probablement qui distingue mon œuvre des préoccupations plus abstraites" (cité in G. Charbonnier, Le Monologue du peintre, Paris, 1959, p 40).
C'est ainsi que l'on retrouve ici son fidèle compagnon, l'oiseau Loplop, figure totémique de l'artiste. Tour à tour espiègle, mélancolique ou cruel, suivant sans doute les préoccupations de son double créateur, il est ici petit oiseau de nuit, traité à la fois dans le vide et dans le plein. Ce traitement épuré est-il à mettre en relation avec le titre du tableau Simplicité?
Contrairement à ses collègues abstraits qui ne pouvaient établir aucun consensus sur la signification et la nécessité des titres, donnant ainsi à leur œuvre un nom de technique suivi d'un numéro, la réponse de Max Ernst ne pouvait être plus ironique: "La comptabilité me semble être le comble de la disgrâce" (M. Ernst, La Nuditité de la femme est plus sage que l’enseignement d’un philosophe, Huismes, 1959, Cologne 1970).
Telle une fenêtre ouverte sur le monde intérieur de l'artiste, le titre pour Max Ernst libère le tableau de ses frontières physiques et visuelles. Il déclare d'ailleurs: "Jamais je n’impose un titre au tableau. J’attends que le titre s’impose à moi. Après l’avoir peint, je reste souvent sous la hantise du tableau et l’obsession cesse au moment où le titre apparaît comme par magie» (cité in La Nudité de la femme est plus sage que l’enseignement d’un philosophe, Huismes, 1959, Cologne 1970).
Max Ernst was 69 years old in 1960 and living in Huismes, Touraine, with his partner Dorothea Tanning. Far removed from the busy city streets and the dogmas of the Surrealist group from which he was excluded in 1954, Ernst continued to produce a steady stream of work. His conversations from 1955 on with his American biographer, Waldberg, led him to reflect more deeply on his life.
Never limited by either subject or surface, the processes he used to produce his art were always central to his practice.
For this painting, presented for the first time at public auction, the artist used a scraping technique known as grattage. After preparing the canvas with a layer of blue and yellow oil paint, he placed it on a textured object similar to the patterned grain of kraft paper, and scraped to reveal its surface. Ernst then worked within the painting, establishing a dialogue with the random marks and shapes created by the texture.
This technique, an adaptation for painting of the frottage rubbing technique he invented for drawing in 1925, would appear to be the visual arts equivalent of the Surrealists’ automatic writing, making it possible to suspend control of rational thought in order to express the subconscious mind – often the initial inspiration for the artist's work.
As an artist unconsciously close to nature, Ernst noticed that almost everything he rubbed or scraped automatically became a forest.
No doubt presaged by the German Romantic movement of his antecedents, the place of man and nature in art was of central concern to him. In an interview with Georges Charbonnier in 1959, Ernst explained: “Although we rarely find a faithful depiction of man in my paintings, everything is anthropomorphic: birds, trees [...]. This is probably what distinguishes my work from more abstract concerns” (quoted in G. Charbonnier, Le Monologue du peintre, Paris, 1959, p 40).
One of these animals is his faithful companion bird Loplop, a totemic figure for the artist. Mischievous, melancholic and cruel by turns – no doubt a reflection of its double creator’s own concerns – in this work it is a small night owl, depicted both as a solid and a hollow form. Does this pared-down treatment relate to the title of the painting, Simplicity?
Unlike his abstract contemporaries who failed to agree on the meaning and necessity of titles – and so titled their works by the technique, followed by a number – Max Ernst’s response could not be more ironic: “Accounting seems to me to be the height of disgrace” (M. Ernst, La Nuditité de la femme est plus sage que l'enseignement d'un philosophe, Huismes, 1959, Cologne 1970).
Like a window into the artist's inner world, Ernst sees the title as freeing a painting from its physical and visual boundaries. He also asserts: “I never impose a title on my painting. I wait for the title to impose itself on me. After it’s finished, I’m often haunted by the painting, and this obsession ends when the title appears as if by magic” (quoted in La Nudité de la femme est plus sage que l'enseignement d'un philosophe, Huismes, 1959, Cologne 1970).
