Specialist note
The 1963 film ‘Cleopatra’ starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton was one of the most expensive films ever produced. It incorporated ornate sets and props, primarily custom made, including the present lot. Stills from the film show this model in various scenes, made to look like stone and marble. The design closely resembles a design by nineteenth century English architect C.H. Tatham in the collection of the Victoria and Albert drawn from an antique consular chair in the Museum of the Vatican in Rome.
