Specialist note
The largely self-taught Abraham Rademaker specialized in drawings depicting Dutch towns and monuments of which 300 were published in Kabinet van Nederlandsche en Kleefsche oudheden (Amsterdam, 1725). As many of the buildings and monuments depicted in this publication are now lost, the publication provides an important record of Holland in the 17th and 18th Centuries. Besides producing accurate topographical views, Rademaker made imaginary landscape drawings. As is the case here, these drawings often show Italianate riverscape surrounded by mountains which are dotted with imaginary buildings.
