BEAUTIFUL ITALIAN WINES INCLUDING SASSICAIA 1985
Sassicaia 1985
Tuscany
In original wooden case. Slightly corroded capsules. Bin-soiled labels. Levels: top-shoulder or better
Tasting note: History will undoubtedly rank this as one of the greatest wines of the century. As familiar as I am with the 1985 Sassicaia, I did not pick it out as the mystery wine, mistaking it for the Groth Reserve. In its flight, it was the nearly unanimous first-place vote getter, edging out the second half of a magnum of 1985 Groth Reserve that had been decanted into a regular bottle. A stunning wine, it reveals a black/purple color, and a huge nose of jammy cassis fruit, licorice, flowers, and sweet, smoky, toasty oak. Expansive and full-bodied, with sensational purity, awesome power allied to considerable complexity and elegance, moderate tannin, and a finish that lasts over a minute, this magnificent wine should age well for 20+ years.
