“An artist is drawn by a certain genre in terms of form, without knowing why. They adopt a position intuitively and not until later do they try to rationalise or even justify it.”
Fernando Botero
Self-portraiture is one of the most universal pictorial genres in art history. By engaging in this practice (and particularly by tackling this sub-genre of self-portraiture in the artist's studio, or self-portraiture at the easel), Fernando Botero adheres to the very heart of a centuries-old tradition, while still adding his characteristic craftsmanship. Since the 1950s, the artist has embarked on a unique approach to reality, distorting bodies and objects by giving them curvaceous and voluptuous shapes. For L’atelier, he chooses to depict himself standing with a cluster of works hanging on the wall behind him, all of which are paintings already completed, each one corresponding to a specific genre Fernando Botero has addressed during the course of his career: the female nude, still life, the family portrait and grey tones. The artist is facing the viewer, observing us directly, while the canvas he is painting is only visible from the back. What is the artist painting? A still life with citrus fruits and a knife, which seems to be the model here in the foreground? Or is the artist's gaze, fixed on the viewer, a sign that he is actually in the process of sketching us? The mystery of L’atelier is held entirely within this “mise en abyme”, this image within an image.
