“I wanted to represent time as well as how it changes over the long term, which can be seen in the natural world. However, I wanted to do so in a way that was specific to humans, who are aware that their presence is defined by death. I chose to depict the emotions associated with life within an irreversible span of time. I wasn't interested in the arbitrary conception of time proposed by clocks and calendars. This type of time erases itself through repetition and focuses our attention solely on the present. ”
Roman Opalka
In 1965, Roman Opalka laid the groundwork for one of the 20th century’s most radical artistic feats. By starting what he dubbed his “programme”, which consisted of methodically painting numbers one after another and continuing the series on the next canvas, he created a potentially endless body of work that only the artist’s death would one day bring to an end. “If I die today, this list of numbers, which, because it is infinite, has no time limit except for the span of my own life, will come to a logical conclusion through its very completion.” (Roman Opalka, quoted in J. Roubaud, “Le nombre d’Opalka”, Roman Opalka, Paris, 1996, p. 34).
Opalka’s works exhibit an extreme sense of asceticism. His approach never wavers: each piece is made with the same type of one-use brush and the canvases are all the same size (196 x 135 cm, i.e. the same dimensions as the artist's body and arm span). The first canvas starts with the number 1. Numbers painted in zinc white stand out against a black background. After 1972, the artist incorporated a new variable to his work by deciding to add 1% more white paint (titanium white, in this case) to the background. From that point, the canvases took on an increasingly monochromatic look, becoming closer and closer to the painter’s endless quest towards “absolute white”. 1965/1-∞ ; détail 5446535-5462919, in which the numbers can still be seen but seem on the verge of being swallowed up by the background, is a poignant example of this infinite exploration.
The origins of Roman Opalka’s work can be traced back to his childhood. “When I was five or six, I had to stay by myself in the tiny room that served as our house all day long…. I would stare at the clock on the wall. I was fascinated by the movement of the pendulum. Even though it was repetitive, it was the only thing that broke up the heavy atmosphere around me. Then one day, I was watching the clock like I always did when the pendulum suddenly stopped dead. As a child, my immediate thought was that I had succeeded in stopping time through my gaze alone.” Since this formative moment, along the same vein as On Kawara who started his series of Date paintings at practically the same time, Roman Opalka never stopped pursuing a single obsession—that of capturing the inexorable passage of time on canvas.
