Historian, art critic and filmmaker, Gaston Diehl has been at the heart of the artistic creation during his lifetime. He founded the Mouvement des Amis de l’art in 1944 which aimed to disseminate the contemporary art scene through writings, publications and film screenings. He early met Alain Resnais and Madeleine Rousseau who were the protagonists of the first film dedicated to Hans Hartung. Diehl attended the Galerie de France, for which he wrote few exhibition prefaces and met a large number of artists including Hartung. Founder of the Salon de Mai, he helped to promote a new generation of artists. He acquired T1967-H16, directly from the artist shortly after being nominated by André Malraux as Office Director of Exhibitions of the Artistic Action at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This artwork is a beautiful testimony of his admiration and his commitment to the abstract art. Diehl never stopped promoting it and never opposed it directly to those who paved the way: Matisse, Picasso or Gauguin.
