HELMUT NEWTON (1920-2004)

Dans son Autobiographie, Newton parle de sa fascination pour Paris au début de son installation dans la ville: 'C’est exaltant, comme si on était dans un film français…. En tant que photographe, c’était bien pour moi de voir cette vie…. La prostitution m'intéresse depuis toujours, depuis que j'ai vu "Red Ern"' à l'âge de sept ans…. La rue St.-Denis était la rue des putes…. Je me souviens très bien que celle qui m'a marqué était vêtue d’une robe de mariée blanche et d’un voile.' Il a ainsi recréé ce sujet pour Playboy.

In his Autobiography, Newton recalled his fascination with Paris in the early days of settling in the city: ‘It is elating, like being in a French movie…. As a photographer, it was good for me to see this life…. I have always been interested in prostitution, since I saw "Red Erna" at the age of seven…. The rue St.-Denis was the street of the whores…. I remember well one that I was struck with was dressed in a white wedding dress and veil.’ He recreated this subject for Playboy.
