Specialist note
Introduced in the late 1960s, the reference 1680 was the first Submariner to feature a date indicator as well as the cyclops magnifier. Distinguished by its red Submariner printing to the dial, the “Red Sub” as it is known to collectors has become a cult classic.
In attractive overall condition, the present example of the highly coveted model is distinguished by its appealing tropical dial with red Submariner script. Gradually changing from black to a dark brown colour, this single red “meter first” variant is allied to a stainless steel case of strong proportions. Over time, the black colour of the bezel has faded to a highly attractive anthracite tone, further enhancing the appeal of this reference 1680.
