In the Aesthetic taste, the body and neck finely decorated with raised gilt paste chrysanthemum flowers on green and russet branches

Specialist note

The present vase may be what is referred to as "Parisian Granite" in the Faience Manufacturing Co. recipe books. (See B. Veith, Aesthetic Ambitions, Edward Lycett and Brooklyn's Faience Manufacturing Company, Richmond, 2011, p.19.) Edward Lycett (1833-1910) began his career at the Staffordshire potteries. His first major commission after emigrating to America was painting additional pieces on the Presidential service for Andrew Johnson (originally intended for Abraham Lincoln) in 1866. Lycett became director of the Faience Manufactory Co. in 1884, where he is principally known for bold Aesthetic works with opulent raised gilt decoration.
