La Danse fait partie du fameux «Cirque Vollard», un ensemble de 19 gouaches que Chagall réalise à partir de 1927, à la demande du marchand d’art Ambroise Vollard. À cette époque, le peintre jouit déjà d’une notoriété internationale. Il travaille en parallèle sur les Fables de La Fontaine, également pour son mécène, lequel encourage Chagall à mettre son sens du fantastique au service du thème du cirque. Artiste et collectionneur fréquentent alors régulièrement le Cirque d’Hiver, où Vollard loue une loge pour la saison ; l’occasion pour eux d’admirer les costumes farfelus, les maquillages extravagants et les mouvements acrobatiques des corps humains et des animaux. Ces spectacles mirobolants donneront largement matière à la série de gouaches enjouées et débordantes de vie à laquelle appartient cette Danseuse. Chagall n’a pourtant pas attendu 1927 pour se familiariser avec les arts de la scène : il a notamment réalisé le décor du Théâtre juif de Moscou en 1920, l’une de ses commandes les plus ambitieuses, et créé de nombreux costumes pour différents ballets. Dans certaines œuvres, une lueur scintille sur le sol sombre, comme si les objets étaient baignés d’un clair de lune» (in op. cit., p. 366). Les «coulures» vives qui sautillent sur la robe de la danseuse, mêlées à l’effet obtenu par les pigments éclaboussés sur la partie supérieure de l'œuvre, évoquent inéluctablement les expressionnistes abstraits américains, en particulier Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) et Sam Francis (1924-1994). En ce sens, Chagall se montre ici précurseur. Son approche révolutionnaire de la gouache et de l’aquarelle témoigne d’une infatigable soif d’expérimentation, alliée à une volonté de construire un vocabulaire visuel sans précédent, d’image en image. During their circus outings, they could admire the whimsical costumes, theatrical make-up and acrobatic movements of both humans and animals. Unsurprisingly, this wondrous spectacle provided the inspiration for Chagall’s playful group of vibrant action-filled gouaches, an example of which is La Danse. By 1927 Chagall was very familiar with the stage world, having completed one of his most ambitious commissions, the decoration of the Jewish Theatre in Moscow in 1920, as well as producing many costume designs for various ballets. Chagall’s encounter with the circus actually goes back to his childhood and his Hassidic roots, when acrobats and musicians performed for religious ceremonies in the streets of Vitebsk.
Franz Meyer classified this ambitious circus-themed project into two cycles (see F. Meyer, Chagall, New York, 1963, nos. 481-487 and nos. 492-503). Executed in 1928, La Danse is part of the second cycle, that Meyer described as having “a more refined, nervous and elegant vivacity” than the circus scenes painted earlier in 1927. “The life force is transformed into a firework of figural magic and sparkling light. In some the colour flickers before the dark ground as if the objects were bathed in moonlight” (op. cit., p. 366). With its cream-coloured background partially covered with a bright green pigment, animated by splashes of blues and reds splashed or dripping on the pictorial surface, La Danse is literally a “firework of figural magic and sparkling light”.
Indeed, La Danse is relatively unique in its technical and stylistic innovation within Chagall’s visual lexicon. The “drippings” of colours dancing on the female dancer’s dress, emphasizing her movement, and the effect of pigment being splashed in the background’s upper part unavoidably brings the American Abstract Expressionists to mind, especially Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) and Sam Francis (1924-1994). In that respect, Chagall is truly ahead of his time and this ground-breaking approach to gouache and watercolour once again demonstrates how the Russian artist always strived to multiply his artistic experiments, as well as continuously creating an unprecedented artistic vocabulary, by inventing new images. Chagall used this fascinating ‘dripping’ technique in a couple of other works from the Cirque Vollard series, such as in L’acrobate à cheval executed in 1927-1928, that Christie’s New York sold over a decade ago. As a pioneer of “action painting” later developed by Pollock in the late 1940s – early 1950s, Chagall’s “dripping” technique enabled him to create the ‘sparkling’ light effects of circus performances, to enhance the extraordinary and magical side of circus acts and to convey his actors’ and dancers’ movements. Furthermore, the composition of La Danse is truly unconventional, with the dancer’s ambiguous and unnatural pose, but even more so because of the musician playing his violin on his knees, as if his tune (or the dancer?) had put him into a trance. His particularly lively presence invites the viewer to join him in his fantasy world and to penetrate the artist’s unparalleled realm of imagination.
Whilst there had been several glimpses of the circus world in Chagall’s works before the Cirque Vollard series, it now became an important vein of inspiration for the artist and would remain so for the rest of his life. Indeed, the circus became one of his most celebrated subjects, perfectly suited to his magical and lyrical world, leading him to revisit the theme in his famous series of lithographs produced in 1962, Le Cirque, later published by Tériade Editions.
