Artiste génois ayant voyagé en France, en Angleterre et aux Pays-Bas, Giovanni David s'intéressera tout particulièrement au luminisme, tout comme son aîné Pietro Ricchi, dit Il Lucchese (1606-1675), dont il s'inspira pour ses effets de clair-obscur (op. cit.).
