Specialist note

Alice Knewstub (1867-1957) was the daughter of the artist Walter John Knewstub, and had a short career as an actress under the stage name Alice Kingsley. She married Sir William Rothenstein, and they had two sons, Sir John Rothenstein, Director of the Tate Gallery during the War, and the painter and printmaker Michael Rothenstein. Alice's sister, Grace, was married to Sir William Orpen.
