Specialist note

Born at Anizy le Château in 1827, Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (d.1887) studied under David d'Angers at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1840, and first exhibited at the Salon in 1851.
Although the sitter has not been identified, Carrier-Belleuse excelled in his credible busts flamboyant portraits of Parisian actresses and it is likely that the present lot is a portrait of a famous actress of the time.
