L'encrier des frères Goncourt. Cet objet témoigne de l'importance d'Edmond et Jules de Goncourt dans la construction du japonisme dont ils ont revendiqué la paternité. Les auteurs d'En 18.. ont dès 1851 placé les influences japonaises au centre de leur oeuvre. Cet encrier dont il ne subsiste plus qu'une plume - celle d'Edmond suite à la disparition de Jules, atteste de la présence des objets d’arts japonais dans la vie des deux frères. L'inventaire après décès recense en effet de nombreux objets d'art japonais et chinois dans la collection des Goncourt.

En forme de Daruma, la tête formant le couvercle, posé sur un petit plateau en faïence européenne, agrémenté de deux petits insectes en bronze, une mante-religieuse et un criquet, faisant office de porte-plume. Accompagné d'un certificat autographe signé par Gabriel Reuillard. Provenance : Edmond de Goncourt -- Léon Hennique -- Nicolette Hennique-Valentin -- Gabriel Reuillard -- Pierre-René Wolf.

Specialist note

The brothers Goncourt’s inkwell. This object witnesses the importance of Edmond and Jules de Goncourt in the creation of Japonism for which they claim paternity. The authors of d’En 18.. have, as soon as 1851, put Japanese influences at the centre of their work. This inkwell -in which only one pen is remaining after the death of Jules, confirms the presence of the Japanese artistic objects in the life of the two brothers. The inventory after the decease lists indeed numerous Japanese and Chinese objects in the Goncourt’s collection.

On the form of a Daruma doll, the head as a lid, put on a small European earthenware tray, brighten up with two small insects made of bronze, a European mantis, and a grasshopper as dip pens.
