Specialist note

The works of contemporary artist José-Maria David continue in the tradition of the such renowned nineteenth century animalier sculptors as Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875), Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910), Ferdinand Pautrot (1832-1874), and Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879) who specialized in the realistic depiction of animals.
As these great artists before him, David sculpts his animal subjects with great dynamism, but imbued with a great tenderness. This is particularly evident in the individualized and sympathetic faces of the panthers seen in the present lot.
