Quintessential found object
A tabernacle is a small chest placed at the centre of the altar in a church and used to store consecrated hosts. In 1927 or 1928, the Surrealist painter Yves Tanguy visited a flea market, where he found a magical, enchanting object that moved and fascinated him. It was a wooden tabernacle that had been appropriated and transformed for use by an evil cult. The tabernacle is wrapped in striped fur and topped with a head whose facial fur contrasts with the fur of the hair; the lips, nose and ears are worked in leather. With two candlesticks resembling outstretched arms, the found object looks like an imp or a devil escaped from its box. Viewers are especially troubled by the two giant brown glass eyes, the bushy moustache, the open mouth with seemingly human teeth, as well as the dozens of blue and brown glass eyes which serve as decorative buttons for the demon's livery or uniform.
In June 1929, the object chosen by Tanguy was reproduced on the front cover of the Brussels-based review Variétés for a special edition entitled "Surrealism in 1929"(fig.1).It was a milestone in the history and conception of objects among the Surrealists.
In May 1934, on a Saturday outing to the Saint-Ouen flea market, Alberto Giacometti and André Breton were stopped in their tracks by a metal half-mask and then by a wooden spoon whose handle was resting on a miniature shoe (fig.3). Giacometti bought the mask, Breton the spoon. Breton immediately recounted the find in Documents 34 under the title "Equation of the Found Object". In May 1936, at the Exposition surréaliste d’Objets shown at the Galerie Charles Ratton (fig.2), the objects were categorised: natural, natural interpreted, natural incorporated, disturbed, found, found interpreted, American, Oceanic, mathematic, ready-made, ready-made assisted, Surrealist. Apart from the Surrealist objects which featured prominently in the exhibition, the "found objects" category stood out for its high number of contributors: eighteen. Of these found objects, Tanguy's tabernacle is undoubtedly the one which struck the most visitors. It is worth noting that this is where Meret Oppenheim showed as a Surrealist object her Tasse, soucoupe et cuillère revêtues de fourrure, which would soon be dubbed Le Déjeuner en fourrure (fig.4).
In the Dictionnaire abrégé du surréalisme by André Breton and Paul Éluard, bundled with the catalogue for the Exposition internationale du surréalisme of January-February 1938 (Galerie Beaux-Arts, Paris), three found objects were reproduced: Tanguy's tabernacle, Breton's spoon and a "wooden crucifix used as a sheath for a sharpened dagger". The object found by Tanguy illustrated the "Quintessence" entry, which was written as follows: "Quintessence – Found object: fur tabernacle with glass eye buttons (black mass)." For Tanguy, Breton and their friends, this tabernacle which was used for black masses or black magic, allows us to understand the supreme essence of reality, in other words, surreality. Remember that the Surrealists were familiar with the novelist Huysmans who, in Là-Bas (published in 1891), described a black mass attended by his protagonist Durtal presided over by Madame de Chantelouve: "Then an altar appeared, an ordinary church altar, topped with a tabernacle above which stood a pathetic, loathsome Christ".
In New York, André Breton published in View in May 1942 "What Tanguy Veils and Reveals". Drawing on his memories, he assembles a collage of two houses inhabited by Yves Tanguy: the family home in Locronan, Finistère, and the Surrealist house on Rue du Château in Paris's 14th arrondissement, which hosted Marcel Duhamel, Jacques and Simone Prévert, Yves and Jeannette Tanguy, Benjamin Péret, Georges Sadoul, André Thirion and, occasionally, Louis Aragon. Breton did not fail to relate that Le Tabernacle occupied a choice spot in both homes: "Pride of place was reserved for an object of unique styling: an anthropomorphic tabernacle covered in fur with candlestick arms and covered in glass eyes standing in for buttons." Breton even tried to count the glass eyes. Thirty years later, in Révolutionnaires sans révolution, André Thirion confirmed Breton's story about the prominent placement of Le Tabernacle at 54, Rue du Château: "The most extraordinary object was a sort of tabernacle dressed in striped fur punctuated by a vertical line of glass eyes; this tabernacle carried a fur head the size of a human head with glass eyes, a leather nose and real teeth. Perhaps it was the head of a mummified man covered in fur. To each side of the tabernacle were appended gilded bronze candelabra in the style of Louis XV. This troubling furnishing, I believe, came from the Flea Market. […] Sadoul granted it pride of place, under the loggia".
The Surrealists bowed to the magical art of Oceania and Native Americans and looked down on monotheism. Thus, in the June 1929 issue of Variétés, two Man Ray photographs showed how Aragon had managed to transform the WC at Rue du Château into a blasphemous chapel, in particular by hanging a heavy crucifix from the pull-chain. But Le Tabernacle cannot simply be reduced to an anticlerical prop; it is fascinating in other ways. As a found object, it retains all its mystery. La Révolution surréaliste in December 1926 announced an "Exhibition of Surrealist Objects" accompanied by a catalogue defining the different types of objects. Unfortunately, the exhibition was never held. If it had taken place in 1927 or 1928, Le Tabernacle would have been the show's star attraction. Le Tabernacle is ultimately connected to the fantastical object which kicked off the Surrealist object movement. In 1924, Breton had dreamed that, in an open-air market near Saint-Malo, he came upon a book with thick, black wool pages whose spine was a bearded gnome carved in wood. This gnome glimpsed in a dream by Breton came to life in Tanguy's Tabernacle.
