Painted with a large panel depicting a junk sailing towards the shores of a walled city, with pavilions and trees visible over the top of the stone wall and a large three-storey pavilion, Teng Wang Ge, just beyond, the reverse painted with a lengthy inscription; together with a huali cover pierced with three ruyi motifs surmounted by a 17th-century pale celadon jade finial carved as a dragon and flaming pearl surrounded by swirling clouds

Specialist note

The landscape depicted on the jar is that of the famous pavilion, Teng Wang Ge, in Jiangxi province. Built in 653 by Li Yuanying, the brother of the Emperor Taizong, it was celebrated in the poem, 'Teng Wang Ge Xu' by the renowned Tang poet Wang Wei (701-763). The inscription on the vase is the preface to this poem.
