William Payne, O.W.S. (London 1754-1833)
Lot 130 Born in London, Payne worked for the Board of Ordnance where he developed his characteristic careful pen, ink and watercolour technique. He was posted to Plymouth in 1782, where he remained until 1790, travelling regularly through Devon and Cornwall recording the landscapes and coastal scenes which inspired his work. Following his return to London in 1790, he returned frequently to the West Country and also undertook numerous sketching tours to South and North Wales, The Isle of Wight, The Lake District and Yorkshire.

Payne was married at Stoke Damerel Church, just outside Plymouth, on 5 February 1785 and here depicts the road down from the church to the Tamar estuary.
