Peu d’artistes sont tant liés à un seul lieu que Maurice Utrillo ne l’est avec Montmartre. Tout au long de son œuvre, l’artiste rend hommage à la Butte parisienne et à son architecture, qu’il représente in situ ou de mémoire, révélant ainsi son attache profonde à ce lieu. Maquis à Montmartre est manifeste de cet attachement en cela qu’il représente ledit Maquis de Montmartre, une ancienne zone marécageuse ensuite aménagée pour former les fondations de ce qu’est l’avenue Junot aujourd’hui.
Bien que les œuvres d’Utrillo semblent donner une vision pittoresque de ce village charmant au sein de la capitale, la réalité en était tout autre. Le Maquis, constitué d’abris et de structures construits à l’aide de matériaux recyclés, était l’épicentre parisien de la pauvreté; les personnes qui ne pouvaient pas se permettre de payer un loyer s’y installaient.
La texture très riche du tableau provient des nombreux détails qui rendent les œuvres d’Utrillo si vivantes. L’on retrouve ses fameux blancs à plusieurs endroits, qui révèlent parfois l’aspect crayeux qui donne vie aux façades maçonnées de Montmartre. En même temps, ce tableau semble inclure des signes de vie, que ce soit par les personnages colorés dans la rue ou le vert éclatant des arbres et leur feuillage abondant. La vie respire aussi dans le fameux Moulin de la Galette à droite - couronné du drapeau français - et sur dôme rayonnant du Sacré Cœur dans le coin en haut à gauche de la composition, qui surplombe les bas quartiers parisiens du Maquis, comme s’il veillait sur ses habitants.
Few artists are as associated with a single area as Maurice Utrillo and Montmartre. Throughout his oeuvre, the artist celebrated the Paris hilltop and its housing, whether he was in situ or working from afar, revealing his profound link to the place. That link is clear in pictures such as in the present work, in which he depicts the so-called Maquis de Montmartre, formerly a marshy area which was gradually improved and formed the foundation for part of what is today the Avenue Junot. Although Utrillo’s works seem to suggest that the Maquis was a picturesque charming village within the capital, the reality was far from it. In fact, it was made up of sheds and structures built with used materials and was Paris’ epicentre of poverty, where people unable to afford rents settled.
The present oil is filled with the textural details that make Utrillo’s works so immediate: his famous whites are present in various areas, sometimes revealing a chalky feel that brings the plaster-coated walls of Montmartre to vivid life. Meanwhile, this picture appears to show life, be it in the form of the colourful figures on the street or the trees’ vibrant green and lush leaves. Life also breathes in the iconic windmill on the right, the Moulin de la Galette, topped with the French flag, and the Sacré Coeur’s gleaming dome at the upper left corner of the composition, that discretely dominates the Maquis’ Parisian slums, as if watching over its inhabitants.
