According to a legend from Provence, Martha, Mary Magdalene, Lazarus and three others set off from Marseille in a boat without a rudder or a sail to preach in Tarascon. Redon followed the details of this story faithfully in La barque rouge (circa 1900; Musée d’Orsay, Paris), yet in the several variations he completed of this subject, he more often than not appears to stray from the strict iconographical details. The present lot is a beautiful example of Redon’s symbolic rather than descriptive interpretation of the legend, characterised by its rich dramatic golden light sweeping through the composition and contrasting with a tormented turquoise sea
