Lucien Grandjean was a soldier who had been wounded during the First World War, the consequences of which was blindness, possibly due to a new type of gas used by the Germans on the battlefield. As it was customary at that time, many wealthy people hosted wounded soldiers in their homes to look after them. Grandjean was welcomed into the Hessel household and Lucy grew very fond of him – a few snapshots taken by Vuillard show Lucy’s caring feelings for Grandjean, accompanying him in the streets of Paris, possibly following a ceremony during which he was decorated with the medals that he is seen wearing in the photograph. The present pastel of 1915 is probably the earliest work bearing witness to Grandjean’s arrival in the Hessel household, portraying him as a blind helpless man holding on to his cane, his only means to help him get around.
Grandjean is mentioned several times in Vuillard’s diaries. He most likely met the Hessels shortly after this passage taken from the artist’s personal journal, in a letter dated 9 April 1915, "That night Lucie [sic] was overwhelmed by her visit to the blind people […] I am going to place de la République to meet up with Lucie [sic] and her blind people, to give them food, go for a walk, on the sidewalks then take them back to Reuilly and return with the metro. Lucie [sic] very emotional" (quoted in A. Salomon and G. Cogeval, op. cit., p. 1179). Vuillard was also a witness at Grandjean’s wedding on 2 March 1916, whilst Lucy Hessel was the wartime godmother, looking after him and caring for his only child, Lucie, better known as Lulu (1921-2004), as her own daughter and ultimately adopting her.
