Sujet récurrent dans l'œuvre de Théodore Rousseau, cette composition étonne par ses dimensions importantes, contrairement à nombreuses autres études d'arbres de format plus petit qu'il réalisa au même moment c'est-à-dire vers 1845, selon Michel Schuman (op. cit.).

While similar subjects were often treated by Rousseau, this composition surprises because of its size, in contrast to the numerous smaller studies of trees made around the same time, i.e. 1845 (M. Schuman, op. cit.).
