Specialist note
Le sujet d’Apollon écorchant Marsyas fut également traité par Loth en peinture à l’huile (voir Giuseppe Fusari, Johann Carl Loth (1632-1698), Soncino 2017, no. 59, fig. 19). Cependant ces deux dessins, si particulier de par leur style et leur technique, ont certainement été imaginés et réalisés comme des œuvres à part entière.
Apollo flaying Marsyas was treated by Loth in oil (see Giuseppe Fusari, Johann Carl Loth (1632-1698), Soncino 2017, no. 59, fig. 19), but the present drawing of that subject and the other drawing in this lot – in the artist’s signature style and technique – were undoubtedly made as independent works of art.
