Specialist note

When I cut through the surface of the layers of twenty or more colors with a palette knife, the colors hidden underneath come alive, and they carry both the internal rhythm and the external composition......Like a beehive, each square is a microcosm bursting with its own energy, namely, life.

KIM TAE-HO

Kim Tae-Ho was born in Busan in 1948. He then studied at Hongik University where he graduated with a BFA in 1972. After exploring figurative representations in the 1970s, Kim gradually moved towards geometrical abstractions through his experimentation of different materials. He ultimately mastered his signature technique through his series Internal Rhythm (Lot 645) started in the late 1980s. The one featured here perfectly reveals the artist's technique in adding multiple layers of paint on the canvas before carving into it to reveal delicate nuances of color as well as a sense of three-dimensionality, much like traditional lacquer work. This work embodies a deep exploration of spatial structures while ingraining a subjective sense of rhythm.
