Specialist note
The design corresponds closely to 18th century hall chairs in a private collection attributed to Mayhew & Ince and bearing the painted crest of the Buller family of Downes, Devon. Another suite of the same design was sold anonymously Christie's, London, 31 May 1979. The latter bore the stamp 'BERTRAM & SON, DEAN ST., OXFORD ST., W', cabinet-makers, upholsterers and antique dealers whose business was established in Soho in 1830 (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700 - 1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 18).
