Noah and the Animals leaving the Ark
engraving, 1544, on laid paper, watermark Ladder in a Circle surmounted by a Star (similar to Briquet 5920), a very good, early impression of the first state (of two), trimmed on or just inside the platemark but retaining a fillet of blank paper outside the borderline, with a vertical central fold, generally in good condition
Sheet 304 x 384 mm.

Peter Lely (1618-1680), London (Lugt 2092); possibly his posthumous sale, Sonnius, Lankrink et Thompson, London, 11 April 1688 (and following days).

Specialist note

Albeit with some changes and additions, the composition is based on Raphael's fresco in the third vault of so-called Logge di Raffaello in the Vatican.
