etching, 1617, on laid paper, watermark Lion and Star (Lieure 38), a fine, early impression of the only state, trimmed inside the platemark but retaining a fillet of blank paper outside the borderline on three sides, trimmed to the borderline below, in very good condition

Specialist note

According to Lieure, good, early impressions always have the present, elaborate watermark of the Lion with Star: 'Les belles épreuves sont sur papier au filigrane du lion étoilé.' He rated such impressions as rare.
