Specialist note

According to Karen Orchard and Isabel Schulz, the first owner of the present work, the painter and sculptor Herman Schütte (1893-1974), "is reputed to have exchanged [the present] collage for one of his hairpin sculptures produced around 1925" (op. cit.).
