Christ with a crown of thorns and gilt loincloth, beneath a banner inscribed 'I.N.R.I.,' a skull at his feet, on a black-painted wood cross, flanked by a figure of the Virgin Mary and Saint John in gilt-sprigged robes, on square bases, perhaps modeled by J.F. Eberlein

Specialist note

A figure of St. John, similar to the right hand figure of the present lot, is illustrated by R. Rückert, Meissener Porzellan, Munich, 1966, pl. 237, no. 974, where the author cites J.F. Eberlein's work records of September 1740 "Eine Fiur, die Mutter Gottes unter dem Creutze vorstellend. Den heil. Joannes darzu." For related models which the authors attribute to J.J.
