Specialist note

Deer, symbols of longevity and prosperity, were a favorite subject for Chinese artists, particularly in porcelains during the reign of the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722) and in paintings during the Qianlong reign (1736-95). Compare to a smaller pair of similar recumbent deer from the collection of the Hon. Mrs. Nellie Ionides, sold in Christie's, London, 11 November 2003, lot 163.
