Specialist note

William Wells (1768–1847) was a shipbuilder and art collector. Wells was a prolific art patron, in particular of Edwin Landseer, from whom he bought almost thirty pictures, and of the young landscape painter Frederick Richard Lee, who provided nearly fifty.
