Specialist note
A repeater’s purpose is to tell time in the dark, and this complication was not introduced to the world of horology until the late 17th century. Various versions and improvements, such as the dumb, minute, quarter, five-minute repeaters and others, have been developed over the years. Today, such a feature is no longer needed. However, it is still appreciated today by watch collectors because of its technical complexity, such as the present watch.
The Sonnerie function, usually found in clocks and clock watches, allows the movement to strike the hours and quarters on passing for “Grande Sonnerie” or “Petite Sonnerie” where it strikes only the hours on passing.
The present watch – apart from being able to strike the hours and quarters on passing with the “GS, PS or S (for Silence)” slide, can also strike the hours and quarters on demand via the button at 10 o’clock.
For a similar pink gold watch, please see Lot 2344 in this sale.
