Sam Falls has travelled widely across the world, constantly searching in nature for ideas that would form the basis of his eclectic art spanning almost all mediums. Inspired by the beauty, variety, volatility, as well as ruthlessness of nature, he has commented that his main purpose in art is to ‘traverse issues of abstraction and representation in a meaningful way.’
In this highly tactile and raw work of art, Falls draws the viewer’s attention to three key elements: the material qualities of the ink on hessian sack, the organic shapes that seem to materialise organically from the core of the composition, as well as the transient life-cycle of the physical object itself. Often using materials that age either through discolouration, fraying or rusting, the artist centres his practice on time-based processes. Therefore, while his sculptures made of dishevelled sacks, copper, or marble may seem fresh or imposing, they also contain the potential for aging through Falls’ deliberate decision to leave untreated surfaces exposed. Thus, they mirror nature itself in the way in which they submit to the unstoppable progression of life.
Previously a student of physics, linguistics and aesthetics, Sam Falls’ interest in a multidisciplinary approach to art is evident in all of his compositions regardless of their medium.
