Cette œuvre ayant pour modèle Julie Manet est un fragment d'une esquisse pour Le piano (1888; Clairet, Montalant et Rouart no. 235; collection particulière). Elle fait partie des trois huiles préparatoires pour ce tableau représentant Julie Manet et sa cousine Jeannie Gobillard. Dès 1933, elle est mentionnée comme fragment dans l'ouvrage d'Angoulvent, ce qui suggère que cette toile a certainement été trouvée sous cette forme fragmentaire dans l'atelier de l'artiste puis montée sur châssis. Elle fut ainsi conservée dans la famille de Paule Gobillard, nièce de l'artiste, jusqu'à ce jour.

The present work depicting Julie Manet is a fragment of a sketch for Le piano (1888; Clairet, Montalant and Rouart no. 235; private collection). It is one of the three oils done in preparation for the painting showing Julie Manet and her cousin Jeannie Gobillard at the piano. As early as 1933 the work is mentioned as a fragment in the publication of Angoulvent, suggesting that it was found in this state in the artist's studio and mounted on a stretcher. It was then kept by the family of Paule Gobillard, the artist's niece, to this day.
