Il était le praticien, et ciselait la pierre, montait les armatures, gâchait le plâtre, faisait les moules, polissait et patinait le bronze. Toutes les œuvres d'Alberto durant ces quarante années, sont passées entre ses mains. (...)
Les deux frères vivaient à quelques immeubles l'un de l'autre, et travaillaient dans des ateliers contigus, chaque jour, communiquant parfois par des mots, mais aussi bien dans le silence. Ils prenaient ensemble leur repas plusieurs fois par semaine, prenaient ensemble un verre au Dôme, ou à la Coupole, poussant parfois jusqu'au Flore. Ils fréquentaient les mêmes poètes, les mêmes peintres, les mêmes tenanciers de bars, et les mêmes bohèmes. Et pourtant ils restèrent complètement autonomes, chacun d'eux étant solitaire à sa façon, tout en restant un Giacometti."
For forty years he would live at the side, and as far as the outside world was concerned, in the shadow of Alberto. He was the technician, he chiseled the stone, built up the armatures, killed the plaster, made the casts, polished and matinated the bronze; every work of Alberto’s during those forty years passes through his hands. If today there is a suspicion that a false Giacometti has appeared on the market, they have only to send it to Diego’s studio, and he has only to lift it an inch or so out of the crate to recognize if his own fingers have touched it. The two brothers lived a few blocks apart, they worked together in adjacent studios every day, communicating sometimes in words but just as well in silence. They took theirmeals together several days a week, drank together at the Dôme or the Coupole sometimes pushing all the way to the Flore. They hobnobbed with the same poets and painters and bartenders and drifters of Montparnasse. And they remainders completely autonomous, each a solitary figure in his own (but recognizably Giacometti) way.
