Specialist note

Early in his career, Nash was employed as both and architectural draughtsman and lithographer, and Turner is said to have regarded Nash as the finest architectural artist of the day. In 1819 he began a series of sketches of Paris, which were published in 1823 as Nash's Views of Paris. This drawing is probably a study for a watercolour by Nash taken from this viewpoint, sold in these Rooms, 17 November 1987, lot 96.
