Specialist note

After beginning a new firm in the post-war years, Archimede Seguso enjoyed a burst of creativity in his glass designs. He revived the centuries-old technique of ‘merletto’ glass in which fine canes meander within the body to create the effect of netting. ‘Merletto’, which means ‘lace’ in Italian, had been used in Murano manufactories as early as the 16th century, but here, the plastic modeling of the form combined with delicate netting within the glass and strongly contrasting colors create a thoroughly modern design.
