Lot 130 Provenant d'une importante collection particulière européenne
Chana Orloff appartient à un groupe actif d’artistes immigrés qui affluent à Paris dans la première moitié du XXe siècle.
D’origine juive, elle est attirée par la liberté et le bouillonnement artistique qu’offre la Ville Lumière. Née en Ukraine, elle émigre avec sa famille en Palestine à l’âge de sept ans. Elle se rend à Paris en 1910 pour exercer la couture. Elle choisit finalement d’étudier l’art et ne tarde pas à intégrer la communauté artistique parisienne, en fréquentant les cafés et en se liant d’amitié avec les artistes majeurs de l’époque. En 1916, elle épouse le poète Ary Justman. Leur domicile devient un lieu de rassemblement des figures littéraires et artistiques, dont Amedeo Modigliani et Moïse Kisling, pour ne citer qu’eux, et celui d’artistes de passage depuis la Palestine, comme Reuven Rubin. Elle devient quant à elle bientôt une portraitiste de renom.
Les deux œuvres présentées ici proviennent de la même collection européenne, dont l’emblématique Madone, rare exemple du travail du marbre par l’artiste à ses débuts.
Chana Orloff was part of a vibrant community of immigrant artists who flocked to Paris in the first half of the 20th century.
She had a Jewish upbringing, and was drawn to the freedom and artistic allure that the city of lights offered. Born in Ukraine, she emigrated with her family to Palestine at the age of seven. She travelled to Paris in 1910 to pursue an occupation in the dress-making business. She studied art instead, and became involved with the art community in Paris, frequenting their cafés and befriending many of the leading artists of the period. In 1916 she married the poet Ary Justman. Her home became a meeting place for artists and literary figures, including Modigliani and Kisling to name but two, as well as visiting artists from Palestine such as Reuven Rubin. She became well known as a portraitist.
The two following works originate from the same European collection, led by Madone, a rare example of the artist’s early work in marble.
