Specialist note
Formerly attributed to Reynolds, recent research has established this picture to be 'an accomplished replica of the prime version...' the picture acquired by John Fitzpatrick, 2nd Earl of Upper Ossory after the artist's death (M. Postle in Mannings, op. cit.). Martin Postle suggests that it might be related to a previously unlocated copy by John Rising (loc. cit.). Rising was both a portrait and subject painter, and is said to have assisted Reynolds and made copies after his works, for example the Portrait of The Rt. Hon. Charles James Fox, now at Petworth House, which was also sold in Rising's posthumous sale in 1818.
