Each rectangular top centred with a rosette, above a frieze drawer inlaid with meandering floral trails, and two long drawers sans traverse centred with an urn flanked by scrolling foliage, the conforming sides with floral motifs, on square tapering legs, the ring handles and escutcheons replaced
35 ¼ in. (89.5 cm.) high; 50 ¼ in. (127.5 cm.) wide; 23 in. (58 cm.) deep

Specialist note

This pair of marquetry commodes relate to the work of the Milanese ébéniste Giuseppe Maggiolini (1793-1814). He was one of the most celebrated Italian cabinet makers of the Neoclassical period and worked extensively for the Milanese court and for the aristocracy of Northern Italy. So popular became his style, that rapidly generations of Lombard and Ligurian ébénistes were working in the same style. Marchese Litta, along with the designer Giuseppe Levati were the first to recognize his talents as an intarsiatore in the 1760s. His many projects included the furnishing of the Palazzo Ducale in Milan, the Villa Reale in Monza and the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua.
