Cal. 1120/2, automatic lever movement, 36 jewels, 21k gold rim to the rotor with the engraved inscription 1594 - Gérard Mercator - 1994, gilt dial with a black enamel map depicting the Americas and Australia, two hands depicting needles to resemble the early hand-held compasses as used by Gerardus Mercator, both moving in an arc over the two curved sectors graduated for hours and minutes with Arabic numerals, returning to zero after each course respectively after twelve hours and sixty minutes, circular case with stepped bezel and lugs, sapphire crystal display screw back, 18k gold Vacheron Constantin double deployant clasp, case, dial and movement signed

According to the archives of Vacheron Constantin the present watch was manufactured in 1995.

Accompanied by a Vacheron Constantin original fitted wooden presentation box, Vacheron Constantin loupe, Vacheron Constantin pouch, outer packaging and tie-tag.

The Mercator model was launched in 1994 to honor the memory of the famous cartographer and humanist Gerardus Mercator on the 400th anniversary of his death. The various dials represent the Americas or Australia, Europe, Africa and Asia as drawn by Gerardus Mercator in 1587.

When connoisseurs consider some of the most successful efforts to tell time with a mechanical watch in a non-traditional way, the Mercator model from Vacheron Constantin is certainly among those most lauded.
