Specialist note

George Adams senior (1709-1772) was appointed to mathematical instrument maker to George III, which was the most prestigious post obtainable in the field. Many instruments by him and his workshop are still preserved in the George III collection at the Science Museum in London, as well as many other institutional and private collections. The fine quality of his engraving has made his instruments amongst the most desirable. Early pieces by his son and successor (also George Adams) are signed so similarly as to make the two almost indistinguishable.
