Né vers 1872, Léon Pourtau était un peintre et musicien qui fut à l’âge de vingt-deux ans le plus jeune professeur du conservatoire de Lyon. Ami et grand admirateur du travail de Seurat, il adopte la technique pointilliste dans ses tableaux. Sa carrière est brutalement interrompue à l’âge de vingt-six ans lorsqu’il périt dans le naufrage du paquebot qui le ramenait de sa première exposition à Philadelphie. Malgré l’infuence indéniable de Seurat, Pourtau développe un style personnel aussi empreint de la technique
impressionniste.
Born circa 1872, Léon Pourtau was a painter and musician who became the youngest ever professor at the Conservatoire de Lyon at the age of twenty-two. As a painter, Pourtau became an admirer and friend of Seurat and adopted Pointillism. His artistic career was tragically cut short at the age of twenty-six when he was killed in a trans-Atlantic shipwreck after exhibiting for the frst time in Philadelphia. Although clearly a follower of Seurat, Pourtau’s work displays a style of his own, also influenced by the Impressionist style.
