Specialist note

We are grateful to Joseph Baillio for confirming the attribution of this drawing and providing us with additional information. Mr. Baillio will be including this drawing in his upcoming catalogue raisonné on Vigée-Lebrun.

While a label on the verso identifies the sitter as Marie, Countess of Hartig, the sitter is more likely her older sister, Theresia Maria von Hartig, who would have been about eight years old when her portrait was made.
